What is Ewings sarcoma?

-  July 21, 2006  -

Hi Everyone,

The surgery to remove Joe's broviac tube was successful and should do the trick. They have positively identified the bacteria and the antibiotics they are using are typically very successful against this bacteria so things should be improving. He will be on the antibiotics for 14 days. The plan is to put in a PICC line on Monday or Tuesday (it is a type of central line similar to his broviac but it is put into his arm instead of his chest.) The PICC line will allow us to give him his antibiotics at home so he will get to go home after that is placed.

The plan is to administer the antibiotics for the 14 days and then test his blood to make make sure the infection is gone. If it is gone we can then have a new broviac tube placed in his chest and resume the chemotherapy. I think they are going to have the broviac inserted in the morning that day and then just admit him into the hospital to begin his chemotherapy the same day. I think it will end up pushing everything back about 3 weeks or so. If that is the case the last 5 day treatment will conclude Thanksgiving week. For anyone interested, I hear the Children's Hospital cafeteria serves a great turkey dinner.

Tom
